PSG opens Flick and Barcelona's eyes

**FC Barcelona** has realized that it needs to turn to the transfer market to incorporate a top-level left-footed center-back and alternatives on the wings after being defeated by **4-2** against PSG in the UEFA Champions League.

The sports management led by Deco and the coach **Hansi Flick** concluded that the current squad has structural deficiencies in defense to compete at the highest European level, after suffering the first defeat of the season against the reigning continental back-to-back champion.

🎙️ Hansi Flick after the defeat in Paris: 🗣️ “PSG have shown that they are a better team than us. We’ve learned a lot.” “It’s not an excuse, but our preparation for this match after Betis wasn’t the best.” https://t.co/NDTBdD3VPN

The deficiencies of FC Barcelona highlighted by PSG's approach

The match in Paris allowed **Hansi Flick**'s coaching staff to identify the defensive system's shortcomings, where goalkeeper Joan García had to make **10 saves**, **8** of them from inside the box. Passivity in marking the edge of the box made it easy for Désiré Doué and Vitinha to score from range, while João Cancelo was exposed in the fourth goal for not closing down Fabián Ruiz.

The high press and the team's wide play under Luis Enrique made the **FC Barcelona** board realize the team's vulnerability in defending in open space.

Hansi Flick's conclusions about the squad for the 2027 market

After analyzing the game, **Hansi Flick** acknowledged that Gerard Martín cannot establish himself as the starting left-footed center-back in high-stakes matches and that the full-back positions lack sufficient rotation. The technical leadership deems it essential to add a left-footed defender and full-backs with corrective ability to aim for titles in the latter part of the season.

The technical office has reports on center-backs with market values ranging between **30 and 40 million euros** with contracts running until **2028**.

The members of the sports commission of **FC Barcelona** will hold evaluation meetings during November **2026**. If the salary limit allows at the end of the year, **FC Barcelona** will plan defensive reinforcements for the **2027** transfer window.
