Eric Garcia, a 25-year-old center-back, faces the 2026/27 season as an important piece of Barcelona after consolidating under Hansi Flick. The club extended his contract until June 30, 2031 in December 2025, a decision that reinforces his position within the project. The Barcelona market, however, is seeking a center-back to complement Pau Cubarsí.

Eric Garcia gains importance in Flick's Barcelona

Eric Garcia's evolution is directly related to the role granted by Hansi Flick. The German coach has used him as a center-back, right-back, and midfielder, making him a regular solution for different positions.

The 2025/26 season confirmed this growth. In February, Barcelona highlighted that Eric had participated in all official matches played by the team up to that point, reaching 150 games with the blue and garnet jersey.

His performance also had offensive impact. During the 2024/25 campaign, he scored 5 goals, including one against Real Madrid in the 4-3 match in Montjuïc. In March 2025, he reached 100 games as a Barcelona player.

The journey explains why the club decided to secure him. Eric returned to Barcelona in 2021 after his spell at Manchester City and later played on loan at Girona during the 2023/24 season, helping the team finish third in LaLiga and qualify for the Champions League.

Araujo's departure could increase Eric Garcia's prominence

Barcelona's defense faces changes for the 2026/27 season. Ronald Araujo's departure to Liverpool on loan with a purchase option of 55 million euros, in addition to the possible exit of Jules Koundé, offers the opportunity for the defender from Martorell to establish himself in the backline.

Hence, Eric's importance does not solely depend on Araujo's departure. Flick already considers him a player capable of covering various positions, and Barcelona's defensive planning keeps various decisions open regarding center-backs and full-backs.

The contract signed until 2031 also marks a difference from previous seasons. Barcelona decided to extend his contract for five years in December 2025 following his evolution within the squad.

A fitting profile in the planning

Eric Garcia enters this season with 150 official matches played for Barcelona and experience accumulated at Manchester City, Girona, and the Spanish national team. His versatility allows him to compete for minutes both in defense and in the full-back and midfield positions.

His role during the 2026/27 season will be the next reference point. With Flick renewed until 2028 and Eric tied to Barcelona until 2031, the club has room to make the center-back a stable piece in its defense.
